 I was born in Israel, the fourth of seven brothers and sisters, to American parents, both accomplished musicians. When I was five, my parents got divorced. My mother remarried almost immediately to a Charedi (ultra orthodox) man, and he started imposing his views on our modern orthodox life style. I hated him from the first day that he walked into our house, and saw some of us watching a kids' program on television. He turned it off and gave me a book to read about Chessed (kindness).

Retorno’s outside activities are designated for students, parents and professionals and can operate in schools, community centers and the like. Activities include lectures, workshops and work in small groups with students, led by Retorno counselors, and a meeting with a graduate of the treatment program who indulges the audience with his personal story. 
The wars of Israel have exacted a heavy death toll, along with the prolonged suffering of some of the victims who have never healed.

There is a unique dude ranch at the center, run by an authorized and experienced instructor. While horseback riding, the patient gets used to being in control, taking responsibility and caring for a horse with caution and concern.
